Visualize

By taking time to visualize, you are slowly yet powerfully creating a new reality.

Welcome to Your Weekly Words with Julie Avis Rogers, where public speaking meets personal flourishing.  In these posts (the video and the written transcript below),  I’ll share one word to enhance your effectiveness as a public speaker while also giving a boost for your soul! This week’s word is *visualize* so let’s dive in!

It’s time to visualize!

From wherever you are right now, I invite you to do a brief visualization with me:

With your eyes closed or simply with a soft gaze, take a couple breaths and identify a setting or an event where you are most likely to be speaking in front of a group (this could be anything: a wedding reception where you are giving a toast, a large theatre where you are welcoming new parents and students to their school, a meeting room where you are delivering a brief report– the possibilities are endless!).

Once you have the setting or the event in your mind, visualize yourself speaking in front of a group– and simply ROCKING IT. In this space you are confident. You are genuinely enjoying yourself. You are feeling accepted and understood. You are happy.

Play around with this scene:  Maybe see yourself in the car on the way to the event. Or see yourself approaching the room where you will be speaking. You are excited and you are ready. You are glad to see the people who have gathered there. And you *know* you have something worthwhile to share.

Pause and really take notice of what you see here.

Honestly, it’s a courageous act to visualize a scene like this! When imagining something that is stressful or fear-inducing, I know firsthand that visualizing myself in the scene is one of the last things I tend to do. But to whatever extent you can tolerate it, begin visualizing yourself as a confident, genuine speaker who is *simply ROCKING IT.*

By taking time to visualize, you are slowly yet powerfully creating a new reality.  And it’s a real gift to yourself.  Instead of feeling overwhelmed and confused, your body now has a set of directions. It sees and feels and experiences what to do. It knows how it wants to walk into that room, it knows how it wants to show up for that group, it knows what it’s going for– because now, you have a vision

Visualize. Watch it unfold. And enjoy the ride!
