In one of my previous roles, I was often invited to do presentations about the importance of using a multifaith calendar in an organization’s annual planning. And while I was honestly quite grateful that the community cared about this topic, I must admit that the stress of doing all of these presentations sometimes got overwhelming! Some days I honestly wished that I could cancel these invitations or just send the information via email.
However, a turning point came about a year ago, when I realized that I was approaching each of these presentations largely from a place of dread – and that the genuine excitement that I felt about the topic was getting completely lost.
And so I’ve started a new practice and it’s the one I want to share with you today.
When approaching any kind of presentation or speaking event, I’ve made a tradition of starting the process by asking myself the following 3 questions:
What is it that I am excited to share with the audience?
Why am I excited to share it?
Why does it matter?
Before diving into the logistics of the presentation, before outlining my speech, before creating slides or writing anything out, I first spend time reflecting on these 3 questions which keep me grounded in excitement. These questions keep me focused on the fact that I have something worthwhile to talk about and it *will* make a difference to those listening.
This practice has not only made a difference in my preparation process, but it also has been a “secret sauce” in being an engaging and dynamic public speaker. Audience members can tell when you genuinely care about the message you are delivering, and they are much more likely to remember the information that’s been shared as a result. On a personal level, I’ve also noticed that when I ground myself in excitement, I am much more overcome with gratitude and with passion, and it helps provide a balance to the stress and dread that still might creep its way in!
If you don’t have any upcoming presentations or if you want to give this practice a try in a more low-key way, you might ask yourself some similar questions at the beginning of your work day or even in the shower or while getting dressed in the morning.
What is it about today that I am excited about?
Why am I excited about it?
Why does it matter?
Perhaps nervousness or fear or boredom or dread will not be the primary voice! Perhaps glimpses of genuine excitement or gratitude will sneak their way in as well, and it will give you a well- deserved boost to see you through your day, your next presentation, or whatever lies ahead.
